Darrell has spent 20 years working on the inland waterways. Coming from an engineering background as a plant fitter in the aggregate industry, he entered the trade as an experienced coded welder. The first position he held was as a boat builder/ fabricator, where he built several Narrowboat hulls as well as stretching, overplating and installing engines.
Darrell then set up his own business and spent many years taking on commissions to build and repair a wide variety of inland waterways vessels. This included re-bottoming a selection of late 1800s riveted passenger boats under MCA (Maritime Coast Guard Agency) instruction.
He has also worked as an engineer in the hire boat sector, maintaining a fleet of narrowboats so they were fit for hire.
In recent years Darrell has been more involved in mechanical and electrical work (as welding is a young man’s game!), only picking up a welding torch when an experienced welder is required.
As well as working in the marine industry, Darrell has lived off-grid for many years on the water with his family, giving him a hands-on understanding of the various systems and requirements. They currently live onboard a 1908 Dutch Barge on The River Thames.
Having completed the International Institute of Marine Surveyors Diploma in Yacht and Small Craft Surveying combined with many years of experience building, installing and repairing every part of a Narrowboat, Widebeam and Dutch Barge, Darrell feels confident to provide a good service as a marine surveyor.

Available for pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, hull-only surveys, in-water assessments, consultations and valuations on steel narrowboats, wide beams and Dutch barges of any age and construction.
